Working with Glass Kiln – III


In our last technical article – “Working with Glass Kiln – II”, we discussed about compatibility of glasses for fusion. In this article, we will learn more about the decorative material which can be fused with the glass.

Artists have used many kind of materials to create very beautiful glass fusion articles. Some of the materials used for fusing are :-


These are round rods made of coloured glass with compatible co – efficient of expansion. Many colours are available in these rods. The rods have a diameter from 1.5 mm to 6 mm. The standard length is 30 cm, 3 mm diameter rods are most commonly used. The rods are mainly of single colour but multicolour rods are also available. The annealing point of rods is 500C. The rods are made by hand. A wide range of assorted colours like Black, Bright Yellow, Gold, Ruby, Red and Green are available. Different shades of same colour are also available. Glass fusible rods can be used for straight lines or can be bent to make different shapes.

Glass powder is widely used in fusing. The grain size of powder is under 0.25mm. Various colours of powder are available. The fusing powder have different colours when cold; and when heated, another colour is obtained. So please check the powder for its colour before and after the firing .

Coloured hollow cups are also fused to give a decorative effect. The cups are from 60 cm diameter to 150 mm diameter. They make a beautiful addition to the project.



These are uneven granules of glass pieces in various colours. The size varies from 0.5mm to 11.5 mm. According to the size, grits are codified .

Very bright colours are available in grits.
Grits are fused in the temperature range 550 deg C to 600 deg C. The grits are mainly used for surface application in fusion. Grits for float glass have  a COE of 92. it is recommended to test for compatibility before fusing.



These are the glass components that easily enhance your project with colours.

They have small distinct and isolated color changed. Frits are produced by alkali and Sand and are partially heated glass., which is by grinding reduced to powered.

Decals :

Decals are used for decorative glass fusing, Decals are made in both in standard design and customized designs. Temperature for fusing Decal’s is 8000C

Fusible Glass Shapes :

Precut fusible Glass is available in various design and shapes. The shapes are so beautiful that they can create a legend in glass.

Gold Decals :

These are created to fire the elegance of real 22k gold directly to the front or back of any smooth glass surface. Low – fire , precious metal formula produces an ultra lustrous finish . fusion is done at 537 – 615 deg C . and is lead  and cadmium free. With gold decal’s very beautiful art effects can be produced.

Glassline fusible papers :

Glass line paper is a fusible coloured paper that is designed to be fired between layers of glass. It may be use with any COE of glass . the glass line paper is very to cut with scissors , a ragged edge. It may also be used with a paper punch , intricate designs are easy to achieve with this products.

The advantage  is that intricate cuts and shapes may be made from the Coated paper. Several amazing colour combinations are available.

In order to use , the paper is cut in to various required sizes and shapes. Please is cut in to various in water for 1 -2 minutes , remove from water , gently place the paper at the right place . the glass is ready for firing .

Gold ,Silver and Palladium Foils :

Very thin squares of the real metal are fused in between two glasses, place these nearly pure precious metal sheets on top or between sheets of glass for fusing. Leaf is so thin that it must be handled with care.


Copper foil sheet :

Copper foil is a good material to input designs inside of fused glass projects. This thin foil is easy to cut with a scissor. Copper can be used with wide variety of glass. Copper will darken due to oxidation during fusion. Pictures, faces are very common when working with copper foils. The thickness of the copper foil used is .051mm. it is more like a leaf.


Lustre powereds : -

These powered add a unique element to your fused glass projects . lustre powders are high temperature minerals. It actually never melts but just sticks to the molten glass. And therefore has minimal compatibility problems and works for all kinds of glass. Hard or soft.put on top of glass before fusing. After fusing some of them will be stuck to the glass surface. Brush off what did not stick, for later use. The effect obtained can make you stunned.

Vitreous paints and stains  :

Vitreous paint is mixture of ground glass and a pigment oxide . these superior glass and paints are offered in packets, containing powered colours which may be mixed with water and gum Arabic before application to glass subsequent kiln firing.


Iridizing Spray :

It is a chemical to iridize glass and fused glass pieces , not only glass ,these spray can be used to iridize anything. Some iridizing chemicals are toxic and corrosive . this is a dye a chemical like stannous chloride solution are used . best result are achieved when the glass is fired around 5500C. The chemical can be sprayed with and spray device. As it toxic we must have proper ventilation at the work place.


Bubble Effect Colours

These colour are available in powder form. They create a characteristic bubble effect when applied in between two glasses.



 It looks as if dew drops have been trapped in glass and it glass a very good effect to the fused glasses.

These colour are available in ‘Marble Effect’. When applied on the surface of the single glass and fired. It gives a marble effect . it looks as if marble stones have been embedded in the glass.

Glass Flowers :

These are colourful flowers made of glass  compatible for fusion. These are


 made in very vibrant colour and give a great beauty and elegance to the fused glass design

To conclude, it is worth mentioning that glass fusion is a specialized work that requires work that requires both artistic mind and skill. It needs lot of experimentation and experience to get  desired results when working glass in kiln
